aesthetics role in music
Aesthetics, in terms of philosophy, can be succinctly defined as the comprehension and understanding of beauty and art. The production of art and the exploration of the mind through it has a significant impact on society and my personal life every day. A major concept in my life is music, and its overarching theme is that it can be used as a form of exploration of the mind and has the ability to free thoughts that may not be able to be expressed purely through words. Not only does music, and other forms of art, have the ability to be used as an outlet for thoughts and emotions, but also for the receiver who is experiencing the art. Considering the fact that art, as a whole, encompasses everything, there are a multitude of ways that art can impact lives. Everything consumed, from the literal sense of food to the non-real sense of thoughts, the comprehension, or the aesthetics of the art, is consistent in its impact. One specific sector previously mentioned is music, my personal favorite. Music is often overlooked when looking back at the greatest artworks or the most impact ideas, but without music, and its impact on billions of people, it would be almost impossible to produce specific ideas through a different form of art. One great example of this is Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, a conscious rap album straight from the roots of Compton, USA. The reason that this is such a great example is because of the fact that the way the album is crafted and produced not only shows the grittiness of what life was like in Compton, but also the beauty that can be found within it. The emotions put into this album have no limits whatsoever, and the output is equally open to interpretation. Listeners have an abundance of opinions and emotions to consider, while all still learning and impacting the African American community. Another example that is not necessarily a learning experience is Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Aphex Twin, who pioneered the IDM scene, Intelligent Dance Music scene, used raw and unfiltered noises to produce his music. This not only gave the artist an outlet to produce emotions and thoughts through art using random noises, but its complexity gave it many angles to be seen from. Overall, the ideas input and output from art is extremely important, aesthetically and personally. Art impacts millions, if not, billions, of people daily, and despite aesthetics being undermined, it's truly the main exemplar for producing emotions through art.
